One Brave Step at a Time
I have never especially loved being the new person, but I have been the new person many times.
As a child, I moved from one state to another and learned what it meant to walk into a school where everyone else already seemed to know one another. I know the feeling of unfamiliar hallways, new classrooms, and wondering where I might fit.
Later in life, it happened again in different ways—moving from one church to another, entering new communities, beginning fresh chapters I did not plan, and eventually making my way to Lubbock and to Second Baptist.
What life has taught me is this: belonging rarely happens all at once. It grows one brave step at a time.
That may be why I have such deep respect for people who walk into church for the first time—or the first time in a long time. It takes courage.
And truthfully, it can also take courage for longtime members to step beyond the circles they know best and reconnect with the wider life of the church.
Some of us need courage to begin.
Some of us need courage to begin again.
Easter is, in many ways, the story of beginning again. The disciples moved from fear to faith, from locked doors to open roads, from grief to hope. Resurrection did not erase their story—it gave them a new chapter.
Perhaps your brave step this season is coming to worship regularly. Perhaps it is trying a new class, learning a new name, serving in a fresh way, or discovering parts of church life beyond what is familiar.
Wherever you find yourself, know this: new life often begins with one courageous step.
Peace,
