Have you noticed how much we have going on in the life of Second Baptist? Ministers used to joke that January was a “slow month,” with the hope that it would be a late year for Easter so Lent would begin later. But those days seem to have changed, along with so much in our world.
We have so many good things happening, and we want you to be a part of all of it!
The Second Page will now come out on Tuesdays. This is to make sure you are in the know for Wednesday nights, Sundays, upcoming special events, and more.
Lent
We will begin this special season of reflection with Ash Wednesday. For a long time, I lived in the space of thinking that Lent was all about being somber and sacrifice. It is a time to remember what might distract us from God. Lent is forty days, in the same vein as Jesus being in the wilderness for forty days, setting aside basic pieces of life. I think one part of the wilderness story that we often overlook is that Jesus went to the wilderness to connect more deeply with God.
Over the last two seasons of Lent for me, 2024 and 2025, life threw me into a new space with Lent. Neal died during Holy Week 2024, and I was grieving the death of my mom in October 2023.
I spent much of 2025 processing my new life and discerning what God was telling me through the season. I felt a calling to stop, a reminder of the ways God has shown up for me through people, music, and words. While I did not give up an item, I had to recognize what was missing and how to still live my best life while connecting to God and the work God is doing in my life.
The truth is, there were beautiful moments of good things.
This Lent, our resource will be Tell Me Something Good. Right now, no matter where you are in life, we all need to hear something good. Click the button below to access the devotional, and read on to see all that Lent will bring.
Leadership Workshop with Jon Singletary
Saturday, February 21, 10 AM–3 PM
Sunday, February 22, 12–3 PM
Leadership in the church is not reserved for a title, a position, or a committee, it grows wherever faithfulness, care, and courage are present. Scripture reminds us that “to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good” (1 Corinthians 12:7).
If you have ever sensed a nudge to serve more deeply, to grow in wisdom, or to better understand how God might be using your gifts, we invite you to join us for a Lay Leadership Workshop. This gathering is designed for those who already lead and for those who may not yet see themselves as leaders, but whom God is clearly forming within the body of Christ.
Together, we will reflect on leadership rooted in humility, purpose, and shared ministry as we seek to build up the church and serve faithfully where God has placed us.
We hope you can attend all or some of the weekend. It will be a wonderful time of learning, connecting, and growing together. RSVP by clicking the button below and join us as we prepare to see how God will guide us as we LEAD in the future.
